David Cantarero Tomá
David Cantarero Tomás

Artist, researcher and associate professor (BFA / FCSH-UZ). Graduate in Fine Arts and Master in Contemporary Thought from the University of Barcelona, as well as a Master in Artistic Production from the Polytechnic University of Valencia, where he is currently completing his PhD thesis. He completed his studies at the University of the West of England, Bristol (UK) and at the Faculty of Arts and Design of the National Autonomous University of Mexico, in Mexico City (MX). Since 2022 is member of the research group “Aesthetics and philosophy of the image”.

His artistic and research activity focuses on various issues around the image understood as an artifact or device, the different ways in which it manifests and its different functions, addressing all of this from the problematic of representation. Among the aspects discussed, it is worth highlighting the notion of estrangement (V. Shklovsky), a phenomenon whose transversality allows connecting some conceptual considerations with those factors that more directly concern the materiality of the images. Transferred to his works, this would range from the materials, processes, techniques and tools used in their production, to the strategies and equipment used for their final presentation and exhibition.

He has participated in international artistic and research residencies such as the KUB-Land Vorarlberg in Bregenz, Austria (2017), or the SAARI Residence in Hietamäki, Finland, (2014), has been selected in various art contest such as the Mostra Art Públic of the Universitat de València (2022 and 2018) or the Mislata Biennial Public Art Awards 2016, and enjoyed production grants such as the César e-Fluxus (Zaragoza, 2019), or the BilbaoArte Foundation Grants (Bilbao, 2016). His work has been exhibited both individually and collectively in countries such as Austria, Finland, the Czech Republic and Mexico, as well as in different national galleries, museums and art centers including the IVAM (Valencia), the CCCC (Valencia), the Josep Renau Hall of the UPV (Valencia), the Luís Adelantado Gallery (Valencia), La Posta Foundation (Valencia), the CCCB (Barcelona), the Museum of Teruel, the Paraninfo of the UZ, the Palacio de Sástago (Zaragoza), or Etopia, Center for Art and Technology (Zaragoza) among others.
